Mindful tips for the festive season

Start by making a rule for all the food you can eat rather than what you can’t you have.

Feeling guilty about what you eat will ruin your motivation.

Always try to have a high protein breakfast.

If you fancy a mince pie, why not just eat an extra portion of vegetables during the day.

Try and keep active by talking the stairs, try getting out of the lift a floor or two earlier and using the stairs.

Have light coloured drinks rather than dark spirits or cocktails.

Stick with vodka and gin and tonic or white win with tonic.

Light coloured spirits contain less sugar.

Being a designated driver could also save you from the excess calories.

Eat from smaller plates so even if you pile your plate up you won’t actually be overdoing it.

Changing your mindset is the biggest challenge that will have a huge impact on your whole weight loss journey.

Remember the goal you set about feeling sexy or feeling confident in your new outfit, keep visualising that goal especially when you’re contemplating that extra drink or that extra bit of food you don’t actually need.

Stay positive and focus on your goals, be mindful about what Christmas is actually about and enjoy time with friends and family without worrying about what you can’t eat or drink.

Drink more

How many of you are actually drinking enough water?

Our body is made up of about 60% water so it’s important to keep hydrated to maintain and support the various functions the body requires water for, for example aiding digestion and maintaining body temperature.

Drinking water is a great way to help you eat less too.

By having a glass of water 20 minutes before a meal can help you feel fuller.

Water is boring I hear you say!

Let’s make it more interesting by trying some of the following:

  1. Adding fruit slices
  2. Using a favourite cup or glass
  3. Get a water filter
  4. Try sparkling water
  5. Use an app to track your drinks
  6. Brew herbal tea and let it cool and add some ice

You can also increase your water intake by eating water rich foods such as watermelon, courgette and grapefruit to name a few.

A little extra time

On Sunday we will all hopefully get an hour to ourselves as the clocks go back an hour.

What have you got planned with the time?

Some me time, extra time at the gym or a well deserved lie in.

Whatever you decide make sure you can make the most of your time.

Me time could be enjoying that hot coffee you never get to drink during the week because it’s gone cold by the time you get to it.

It could be reading a book a magazine, having a nice long soak in the bath or doing some meditation.

It could also be going out for a run or having a workout in the great outdoors or for those less energetic a nice stroll in the autumnal weather.

Whatever you get up to try and make use of that extra hour in a way that’s beneficial to you!

Humanity lives on coffee

How coffee can help you with your weight loss goals.

Coffee is high in antioxidants and some vitamins and minerals.

The caffeine in coffee can also give you that extra bit of get up and go when it comes to making you feel energised.

Coffee also contains fat burning properties which is amazing as long as you’re not overloading it with cream and sugar it can be beneficial for you.

Caffeine can also increase the rate at which you burn calories at rest which is called resting metabolic rate.

What’s not to like about burning calories when you’re resting?!

So next time you have a coffee try an espresso on your way home before your workout or try adding some cinnamon to your regular coffee.

To cardio or not to cardio

Cardio is often praised for its quick acting fat burning benefits.

Cardio is your friend if you want to lose weight.

This doesn’t have to mean running miles and miles or doing 40 minutes plus on the treadmill or stepper.

The secret is to make cardio work for you, finding something you enjoy doing and doing it in the right amounts and intensity.

High intensity training or HIIT is amazing for fat loss due to its short sharp burst of cardio.

Circuit classes are also a great way to lose fat.

Why not try something different, mix it up a bit, you may actually find something that works for you.

Everything counts

Do you feel demotivated and just feel like you’re not achieving your goals?

Don’t be defeated, just because you were too busy to attend that class.

Everything counts, try making some small changes in your routine to get extra energy doing things you wouldn’t even consider to help you.

How about taking the stairs, or getting out of the lift one or two levels lower than normal, walking on the escalators.

Those are just a few examples of how you can get more movement in your day to get the body moving and improving circulation.

Movement, be it walking or squatting or skipping can be great for you on so many levels, not just for achieving weight loss but improving mood and mindset and making you want to do more in life.

Lost that get up and go

Are you struggling to get motivated or maintain your motivation?

Exercising regularly becomes a habit, once you’re in the habit it becomes a lot easier.

You might have your favourite class that you attend which is great but having a change is great for maintaining your focus.

Writing down your goal can also keep the momentum going, it doesn’t have to be something far fetched or unrealistic.

Attending 3 fitness sessions a week instead of 2 is totally achievable!
